The Lutheran Welfare
Full Description
In mid-March 2015, the civil conflict in Syria entered its fourth year and continues to escalate in scale and scope. There are now 7.6 million internally displaced persons, according to UN OCHA estimates. Over 3.3 million Syrians have sought refuge in neighboring countries and Northern Africa. This number is expected to rise further. Over 620,441 Syrians have crossed the border into Jordan. More than three quarters of these refugees are living within host communities, amongst the Jordanian population. In some areas, the refugees outnumber Jordanians. This creates tensions over dwindling public and natural resources, including access to services. 25% or 97,858 live in the three camps of Zaatari, Azraq and Emirati Jordanian.
The LWF is assisting Syrian refugees both inside Za’atari camp and in Jordanian host communities. In the interest of social cohesion given the massive influx of Syrian refugees, vulnerable Jordanian families also are receiving assistance.
Assistance to Syrian refugees and vulnerable Jordanians in host communities – both urban and peri-urban – focuses on the populous areas of Northern Jordan, in Mafraq and Irbid governorates.
